What are the causes of the Destruction of our Environment?

  • Overpopulation: To meet the needs of the ever-increasing population, faulty agricultural practices are taken place to produce more food by using herbicides, pesticides, and insecticides which degrade the fertility of land not only for food but also to provide shelter fertility lands are converted for residential purposes.
  • Land degradation: land degradation caused by both manmade which are overgrazing, deforestation, land clearance, depletion of soil nutrients through poor farming methods, etc., and natural calamities such as floods and forest fires.
  • Uncontrolled urbanization: It is one of the major causes because as urbanization increases people need more land to construct homes.
  • Industrialization: It involves the use of various heavy equipment and machinery which need fuels as a source of energy for the production of various goods- which in turn deteriorate our environment
  • Pollution: The environment gets polluted due to a variety of sources of chemical release from factories, vehicles emissions, agricultural waste runoff, etc., (waterPollution, Air Pollution, Soil Pollution, Noise Pollution)
  • Deforestation: Deforestation takes place by human activities such as cutting trees to construct buildings, roads, dams, bridges, etc.,

What are the measures to be taken to protect the Environment?

  • Control rapid growth of population
  • Reduce the overall consumption of resources
  • Planting more trees (reforestation)
  • Saving wildlife
  • Reuse all the resources and materials that we possibly can
  • Recycle what we can, Whenever we can
  • Saving water
  • Prevent using pollutants such as waste products( plastic, paper waste, cigarette filters, etc.,) and chemicals (sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfate, nitrates, etc.,)

“Follow the Environmental laws and spread them to others not only on World Environment Day but also on Everyday”.

Environment Day Anthem

An Earth Anthem penned by poet Abhay K is sung to celebrate World Environment Day.

Our cosmic oasis, cosmic blue pearl
the most beautiful planet in the universe
all the continents and all the oceans
united we stand as flora and fauna
united we stand as species of one earth
different cultures, beliefs, and ways
we are humans, the earth is our home
all the people and the nations of the world
all for one and one for all
united we unfurl the blue marble flag.

World environment day Anthem was launched in June 2013 on the celebration of World Environment Day by Kapil Sibal and Shashi Tharoor, then Union Ministers of India, at an event which is organized by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations in New Delhi.

Poems

1. Keep our Environment green,

So it will be neat and clean.

Keep it tidy and nice,

It will keep away the rats and mice.

Don’t drop it put in your pocket,

Even if it’s a rusty old locket,

If you drop litter you will be fined,

But if you put it in the bin no one will mind.

By Paula

2. Butterflies fluttering around

Canoes moving slowly

across the subtle waves

Kids laughing and gawking

Bugs flying

Ducks fighting

Families grilling

Couples holding hands

This is relaxation

This is nature

By Donna Bella

3. The little tree by the old road fence

Grew in the summer sun.

“I want to grow tall”, said the little tree,

“And growing is so much fun”.

The little brook running beneath the bridge

Babbled and sang all day.

“I want to become a river”, it said,

“So I’m hastening on my way.”

The little bird fluttered from out the nest,

And flew far across the yard.

“I’ll be a big bird,” said she and twittered,

“If each day I try really hard.”

The little boy stood on his tiptoes and stretched.

“I’m just like the rest,” said he,

“I want to grow up and see the big world –

And the sooner the better for me!”

Mother Nature smiled at all her fledglings,

But she did not bid them stay.

She knew that to live and grow and age

Is forever Nature’s way.

By Lenore Hetrick

4. Trees offer to those who love them

A message of peace and rest.

They bring the glow of the setting sun

As it vanishes in the west.

They tell of years that swiftly pass,

With little mark or scar.

They tell of evenings that know naught

But the calm of evening star.

Trees offer to those who love them

Infinite wisdom and grace.

Underneath their boughs tree lovers

See eternity’s face.

By Lenore Hetrick

5. Trees absorb pollution

protect water catchments

Trees produce life-giving oxygen

Trees mitigate climate change

Trees are culturally important

Trees provide habitat for wildlife

Trees are a legacy for future generations.
